In the 1860s Winchester Company found a new repeating rifle that reloads in 3 seconds which was faster compared to other repeaters of that time. This rifle was known as "Winchester Rifle" and after the company developed this rifle, the Winchester family's fortune changed and they became very rich. Because of the capability of the Winchester rifle to fire every 3 seconds, this rifle was widely used in the American Civil War. In 1862 William got married to Sarah and 4 years later on 15th July 1866 they had a daughter, and they named her Annie Pardee Winchester. After the birth of Annie, the Winchester family was very happy. But their happiness didn't last long because their infant daughter died of marasmus a month later. After this Sarah got depressed and she became mentally unstable and it took her a decade to overcome her shock. After 10 years she became normal but after a couple of years, her husband also died due to pulmonary tuberculosis in 1881. Sarah falls into depression after her husband's death and she was living a recluse life. At that time her friend suggested her to seek a spiritualist and know the reason behind her daughter and husband's death through spirituality and following the advice given by her friend she visited a spiritualist in Boston and communicated with William's spirit and her husband's spirit then told her that the death of he and his daughter was the revenge of the spirits of people who were killed using Winchester rifle.

Williams's spirit also warned Sarah that the spirits are now hunting her and in order to escape from those spirits she should travel to the west and to start constructing a big mansion to appease spirits and the construction should never stop. He also warned Sarah that if the construction stops she will die. Following this Sarah sold her home in New Haven, Connecticut and she traveled to the west in 1884 and she bought an unfinished farm in Santa Clara Valley, and thus, the construction of Winchester Mystery House was begun. As there was no ending for this construction no architect was hired and there was no plan for this mansion. The construction of this mansion didn't stop until the death of Sarah on 5th September 1922 due to heart failure at the age of 82 in her sleep. The aim of building this mansion was to confuse the spirits
