Slit Mouthed Woman (Kuchisake Onna)

The Legend

Slit Mouthed Woman (Kuchisake Onna) is a Japanese urban legend. According to this legend, the ghost of a woman whose mouth has been slit from ear to ear wanders around the deserted streets of Japan wearing a surgical mask, covering the slitted portion of her face and targets the people who are walking alone in this deserted streets.

Kuchisake Onna then asks that person (s) whether she is beautiful. If the person answers no then this ghost kills that person with a knife. Instead, if the person answered yes then she removes her mask showing her scary face and then she asks "what about now". If the person answers no after seeing her scary face then the vengeful spirit cuts that person in half, but instead if answered yes, she slits the mouth of the person and makes that person appear like her.

Origin of this Urban Legend

It is said that Kuchisake Onna used to live around 800 years ago. Kuchisake Onna was a very beautiful lady and was married to a samurai. But even after her marriage, she was in love with another samurai and when her husband came to know this he sliced her mouth from ear to ear and he asked: "are you still beautiful". After this incident, Kuchisake Onna died shortly and came back as an evil spirit.

Another version of this story suggests her face was sliced by a woman who was jealous of the beauty of the Kuchisake Onna.

Whatever the story is the legend of Kuchisake Onna is famous in Japan. This legend gained its popularity in 1979 when it was first mentioned in print on Gifu Prefecture newspaper and even today some people believe in this legend.
