Werewolf is folklore of persons who has the ability to shapeshift into a wolf due to a curse that the person gets when that person got scratched or bit by another werewolf. It is said that the person often transforms into a wolf during full moon night. Some modern scholars believe that the legend of the werewolf is a medical condition called clinical lycanthropy, which is a rare psychiatric syndrome in which a person believes that he/she has the ability to transform into an animal or another entity.

Unlike a normal wolf, a werewolf has a big body. As per European Folklore, the physical trait of a werewolf include curved sharp claws, large sharp teeth, unibrow (single eyebrow), glowy eyes and a large body without a tail. These are the common features of a werewolf as its characteristics change from culture to culture. In some culture, it is also believed that werewolf possesses some magical powers and its gaze has the ability to paralyze cattle and children.

Early Mentions of the Legend of Werewolf


Even though it's unclear that when and where the legend of the werewolf originated, but it is considered to be first mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh, an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia, written between 2100 - 1200 B.C.E which is the earliest survival notable literature and second oldest religious text.

In this poem, it is mentioned that Gilgamesh jolted a potential, lover, because she had turned her previous mate into a wolf. There are also mentions of humans transforming into wolves in this poem and due to this many scholars believe this to be the origin of the legend of the werewolf.

Legends regarding werewolf are also mentioned in ancient Greek mythology and early Scandinavian folklore.

The reality of the Existence of Werewolf

Many modern researchers suggest that werewolf is just a mythological creature and the werewolf incidents that took place in the past were done by people who had clinical lycanthropy. As the medical field was not advanced back then, people mistook clinical lycanthropy as a curse. Some researchers also suggest that many people saw these type of creatures in hallucination and mistook as they affect some magical power of werewolf.

But still, even in the modern age werewolf sightings are still reported each year.
