Mothman is a mysterious creature whose sightings were reported from a place named Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and neighbouring towns between 1966 and 1967. This creature got its name "Mothman" due to its appearance. The people who claimed to see this creature said that its shape has many similarities with an insect named moth and its head looks like an owl and it has two red eyes that glow like a bulb and it has a black coloured body that is approximately 8 feet high.

Some of the Sightings of Mothman

The first Mothman sighting was reported on 12 November 1966 when 5 people were digging on a gravesite located in Clendenin, West Virginia. At that time they saw a human-like black-figure
fly above them after sawing this they got scared and ran away from there.

According to an American police deputy, those people were not lying because even when they were asked about that creature in separate rooms they said the thing about it.

Three days later on 15th November, two young couples Roger and Linda and Steve and Mary were returning to their home, it was nighttime and they were coming through a deserted countryside road. That place was also known as the "TNT area" because it was a site of a former munition plant. Those couples claimed to see a large humanoid black figure with wings and glowing red eyes there. Police figured out that the characteristics of the creature saw by those couples were similar to that report given by the 5 people who were digging graves in Clendenin.

After this incident, the legend of Mothman became popular in point pleasant and people living in that area became panic due to this legend and at that time another Mothman sighting also got reported by a woman named Marcella. She lived outside of Point Pleasant. She claimed to encounter Mothman while returning to the parking lot from her friend's home and after she saw that creature in front of their car she got scared and ran back to her friend's home. The appearance of that told by Marcella was similar to that of reports given to the police by previous witnesses and after these incidents, the Mothman's legend became popular in America and other countries.

Theories Regarding Mothman

There are many theories regarding Mothman, some people call Mothman an alien, and some people say Mothman was a demon. But there are 3 theories that are widely accepted.

Theory #1:

The first theory states that Mothman was a mutated sandhill crane. This theory was based on the second Mothman sighting which occurred in the TNT area. TNT area was used as a munition plant in world war 2 and those toxic chemical wastes from that were dumped in the nearby forest and water body. As per this theory, a sandhill crane might have consumed this waste and became mutated into Mothman.

This theory was put forward by ufologist John Keel, the author of the book The Mothman Prophecies.

Theory #2:

According to the second theory, Mothman was a prophet who came as a sign to warn about an upcoming disaster. This theory became famous due to a disaster that took place back then. On 1967 December 15 after a year of the first Mothman sighting. At that time a bridge named Silver Bridge which was a major route that connects Ohio and West Virginia got Collapsed and 46 people lost their lives in this disaster. But before the collapse, a tourist captured a photo of that bridge in which
a creature like Mothman can be seen.

That is why this theory became popular and after this disaster, no Mothman sighting was reported. That is why this theory is widely accepted.

Theory #3:

The third theory states that the Mothman was just a rumor spread by the people of point pleasant in order to increase the number of tourists and to make point pleasant a tourist destination.

Today Point Pleasant is one of the most famous tourist spots in West Virginia only because of this legend of Mothman and from 2002 a festival named Mothman festival began to celebrate in that area and people from worldwide visit Point Pleasant. Not only a festival but a museum was also established in there named Mothman museum.
