There is a story regarding the origin of the urban legend of La Llorona
It is said that a beautiful young girl named Maria used to live in a village in Mexico, back during colonial times. She was famous in the whole village for her beauty and the young men of that village were attracted to Maria.
Maria also got many wedding proposals and her parents also insisted to accept any of those proposals, but Maria rejected all of them as she believed that her beauty could attract a wealthy person.
As time passes by she accidentally meets a young man in the market who was the son of a rich ranchero. She fell in love with him as he was wealthy and that young man also fell in love with Maria as Maria was very gorgeous.
Maria proposed to him to marry her which he happily accepted and they got married and after some time they also got 2 children.
But as time passes by Maria's husband got interested in another woman and one day he married that women and left Maria.
Another version of the story suggests that Maria's husband one day left home and never returned and after a long time she caught her husband cheating on him as she saw her husband with another woman on a horse cart and her husband smiled at his children and ignored Maria while passing by.
However, after she founds that her husband cheated on her, she became very sad and also very angry and in that anger, she killed her 2 children by drowning them in a nearby waterbody.
But after she became normal, she realized her sins as she witnessed the bodies of her children floating on water. She also committed suicide as she filled with guilt.
Another version of the story says that she didn't commit suicide. She just died shortly. She was very sad about losing her children.
According to the legend, after her soul appeared before God, God asked Maria where her children were and when she had no answer he punished her for her ultimate sin and then sent her back to earth to search for her children.
