Russia, the largest nation in the world is rich in history and culture. It has a significant influence over the world whether it is in geopolitics or in any other matter. Russia also has some of the creepiest urban legends, here are some of them.

Russian Sleep Experiment

The Russian Sleep Experiment is the most infamous urban legend in Russia. As per this urban legend, the Russian scientists conducted an experiment on some prisoners of war, to develop a gas that could help the Russian soldiers to fight the war without sleep.

The POWs agreed to the experiment in exchange for their freedom and they were to be in a room which was filled with that gas, though there was no problem for the first few days soon the side effect of the gas created trouble and all of them become violent and started to attack themselves, in which some of them died.

The remaining prisoners were deformed in a shape of a scary creature. It is also said that the remaining prisoner, who is now deformed into a scary-looking creature, told the scientists that he is the one that causes people to sleep at night and he was then shot and they closed this experiment.

But this is merely a creepypasta (as far as I know) but I mentioned it because it is the most infamous tale of Russia often mistaken as an urban legend.

Kola Superdeep Borehole is one of the deepest artificial holes ever to be dug by humans. This hole is situated in the Kola Peninsula, Russia.

This drilling project was started back in the 1970s by the former Soviet Union for research purposes during the cold war when the Soviets were competing with the US in order to become scientifically more advanced than the Americans.

The initial purpose of the Kola Superdeep Borehole project was to study the interiors of the earth's surface and to conduct research.

After five years this hole reached a depth of  7 KM and the temperature also started increasing significantly.

This project was closed forever in 1992 & by 1995 the area was also sealed. By that time the hole was around 12 KM deep.

The reason for the shutdown of this drilling project was stated to be high temperature & lack of funds for the project.

But many believe that the Russian scientists found the gateway to the underworld (hell) down there and heard the screams of people from the hole.

Black Volga refers to an urban legend that was infamous not only in Russia but in countries like Mongolia, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Ukraine, & Belarus, in the 1960s  & 1970s.

It is said that back then, this vehicle was used to abduct people in these countries especially children by a group, possibly a gang, mafia or a cult.

Children were the main target, and it is said that the people were abducted for organs, sacrifices for rituals, and human trafficking.

Many versions of suggest that this communist secret police, gang mafias, vampire, evil or satan himself rides this car.

This urban legend became the inspiration for the creation of SCP - 265, A self-driving GAZ M21 Volga, usually stalks and harasses people.

UVB - 76, also known as "The Buzzer" is a shortwave radio station that broadcast a static sound, but it is mysterious because no one claims to run such a radio station.

Though it is said that broadcasting from this radio station started in the 1970s but the earliest known recording of it was in 1982.

Not only the static sound but there are also several reports of hearing numbers & names in Russian.

It is still uncertain about the origin of this broadcast and who is behind it. Some say that that the military is responsible.
